Is our ‘web’ too invisible?

The other day we had the first major frost of the autumn. I was out early in the morning walking along in a frozen mist that hung over everything – it was wonderful and only just below freezing so not that cold. The light was fantastic as the sun was already trying to penetrate through, though just not yet up to the task. The day was forecast to be sunny and so it turned out with clear blue skies, albeit the temperature did not rise to double figures till well past lunch.

Back to the mist though. As I walked along it was lovely to see how nature adapts to the changes although not everyone is happy. Some people will bemoan the cold and the ice underfoot, some will pull their inadequate clothing around them and brace themselves as they had not dressed appropriately, some will enjoy the silence that the mist causes as it embraces us like a loose cotton wool cloak.

Sadly, I am sure the spider who had put all their careful skills into creating the wonderful web in the picture will know until the sun rays dry the gossamer so carefully spun that breakfast will be delayed. Any self-respecting fly if airborne will see the silky trap, clearly made visible by the early morning frost.

This got me thinking about the way in which we can fall into unsuspecting traps until some change makes the trap visible – hopefully in time to take corrective action before we are too committed.

Interestingly it is sometimes the opposite that is true, and this was made so very clear when a neighbour asked the day before, what I do – we have known each other for a few years but never really discussed such matters. Our ‘wares’ had remained invisible so there had been no opportunity to showcase the work we proudly do. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not in the least suggesting that potential clients should be lured into our invisible web and then made to wriggle if they wish to get free. Quite the reverse, it just felt as if my web was so invisible even if someone wanted to come and inspect it they could not see where it was. So an interesting message for me, which may also have some use for you:

  • Am I keeping my ‘wares’ too invisible?
  • Where can I be seen?
  • Are there any holes in my offering so a valued client may just feel the offering is incomplete?

Well as I strode on my way I had a good think before the sunrays evaporated the mist, and I was at risk of becoming invisible again.

I Hope you have a good think too.

My best wishes,

Peter
