Cargo or crew?

Some years ago I heard the term ‘are you cargo or crew’. It is clear what this means – are you working or being carried.

I was with a client recently where we are working one:one. They are really keen on their own development. They want to make the business they head so much more effective, and a better place to work. They have done their own Insights Discovery Profile and are very self-aware. The impact this is having on their direct team is clear to see. The intention is to complete Insights Discovery for the whole management team in the near future.

Why, well I asked the simple question ‘who is cargo and who is crew?’ A wry look of realisation spread across their face and it was clear that something was needed. The objective we have is to make sure that anyone who is seen as cargo is developed to the crew deck, else a discussion on their future will be needed.

Most people would be horrified if they felt they were described as cargo! Most organisations should not carry cargo either – if it is a business the profitability will fall and may jeopardise the whole business. If the public sector ,the taxpayer is subsidizing ineffectiveness. If the charity sector, the giving by the benefactors is not reaching the cause.

I am vey much a believer in creating the right conditions so people can excel. In my long career I have seldom met anyone who does not respond to doing the best work they can. So if you have people you feel are cargo, what are you doing to train them to be crew, even if it is not in their current role?

Need any help – pick up the phone, I may just be able to help

My best wishes,

Peter
